Mercator projections are my favorite because its a way of showinq the sphere of the earth on the flat surface of a map . Because this projection is centered on the equator , the correct shapes of the features shown the spacing between the latitude lines makes the continents look closer . The map was created by Gerardus Mercator in 1569 .It became the standard map projection for nautical purposes because of its ability to represent lines of constant course , known as rhumb lines .
